Honoring Pastor Roger & Pam Martin

Our lead pastor of nearly 28 years officially retired at the end of March 2016.  On April 10th, Pastor Eli led a worship service to honor Pastor Roger and Pam Martin for their faithful service to our church community. Here are some excerpts from Eli’s message that day:

“I want to say to you guys today, I’ve gotten to know your primary coach and pastor and shepherd- just a little bit in the time that I have been here. Enough to know enough of his heart.  You guys have had a

good coach.  You have had a good pastor.  A good counselor in Roger. You guys have had a good shepherd, a good elder, a good leader, a good mentor, a good advisor. You have been cared for well by a man who gave his life to this particular church.  You guys know that it is never just the pastor, it is also his wife. And, I’ve even been pastored, in the short time I’ve been here, well by Pam as well….So I know enough to know that you guys have had a great team here.  You’ve had a good pastor. And I can’t tell you how many lives he’s changed or how many lives he’s influenced, but I know it is way more than we would ever imagine.  Some of you are still here, here today.  Some are long gone.  Some have never met him or have known his name, but that is the way that influence works.  As he has changed a life, then that person has changed a life, and that person changed a life…he has pastored and discipled and blessed people that he will never meet.  That is the way that influence works.”

“I’ll tell you Roger and I are wired really differently. That probably comes as a surprise to many of you, but there are some things that EVERY pastor prays for and longs for.  Some things that we really live for in so many ways...In John’s older age he got crystal clear about some things…he just starts simplifying everything.  Some of the Bible is so complicated…But John makes things really, really clear and says things like:

Don’t do evil, do good!  Show hospitality!  Work for the truth.  Don’t slander.  Don’t gossip.  Don’t put yourself first.  Love others.  Love each other.  Everyone that loves is from God.   Anyone who does good is from God.

(From 3rd John)

I have no greater joy than to hear, to see, to know that my children are walking in the truth. (3 John, verse 4) You want to honor Roger? This is how you do it.  You walk in the truth.”

“Show him [Roger] that he doesn’t need to be in your ear, running with you every step of the way.  He doesn’t need to be looking out and calling the plays.  It would be great joy, I imagine, to be able to sit back and watch this church live out the truth and live in the Person who is the truth. [2 John 1:1-5]  He doesn’t need to oversee anything.  He can trust that he’s given you the tools – and I know that he has because I’ve seen that.”

“Thank him by the way you live your lives.  This is joy for a pastor. This feels worthy of a lifetime investment.  And again, you guys have it in you.  It is not too hard for this group.  It is not too much to ask.”

Prayer for R&P
The worship service closed in a time of prayer
and blessing over Roger and Pam.

Putting the Youth to work!
To prepare for a new message series we needed more space in the sanctuary.  To make this happen, some smart Pastors put our Youth to work.  First, the youth hauled the baptismal tub from the northwest door up a flight of stairs to the northwest door only to find the door isn't big enough for the tub.  They hauled the tub back down the stairs and around the building to the southwest door and forced the tub through the barely-big-enough door.  Thanks for your hard work, guys!  We now have room a bit more room to live out our vision for the latest message series: WELCOME HOME.
Everyone is invited to attend - Sundays at 11:00 a.m.

Every part of me, praise His holy name!
My soul, praise the LORD
and never forget how kind He is!
He forgives all our sins
and heals all our sicknesses.

Over Labor Day weekend we celebrated our annual Family Camp in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

We set up camp on Saturday, were rained on (as usual), and endured a cold night.

On Sunday we held our worship service in the canyon and had a feast for lunch. BUT! For the first time in YEARS we worshiped, played and talked without rain or snow.

Thanks to everyone who participated to make this year's Family Camp another great weekend of fun!
This summer for our monthly potluck lunches we set a grill up outside for burgers and hot dogs and placed a "Free Food" sign out front to invite our neighbors to come and have lunch with us.  We had a great time meeting new people and sharing a meal with those willing to come eat with us.
